Cloisonne is a very beautiful craft where the decoration is formed by first adding compartments (cloisons in French) to a metal object by soldering or adhering silver or gold wires or thin strips placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often of several colors. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then needs to be fired in a kiln. After it is fired it is smoothed and polished to refine the piece. The entire process is very painstaking and time consuming. It produces the most elaborate results. I love to collect rare Vintage Chinese cloisonne pendants and to create beautiful gemstone necklaces with them, which I sell in my Jewelry by Ishi shop, on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/shop/JewelrybyIshi . In the pendant, shown in the necklace above, many hours of labor intensive work have gone into this gorgeous piece to create the beautiful flowers and birds, as well as the ornate framework at the top. When I decided to make this into a necklace, I used red coral bead accents to complement the red roses, and blue Lapis gemstone beads to highlight the blue birds and the ornate framework. Natural Turquoise stone heishi beads are a delightful addition to complement the aqua leaves, and round pink Chinese cloisonne beads are the perfect accent for the pink flowers. Gold plated heishe beads are the finishing touch for the yellow background and the gold wires that encase the beautifully colored enamels. Matching beaded drop earrings complete the set.
